The CW's deep-rooted acoustic heritage was evident in its quick response and natural reverb when played unamplified (both characteristics of a good archtop), which translated to an open, clear, full plugged-in tone with near carved-top complexity - I've played high-dollar vintage Epiphone and Gibson jazz boxes that sounded thuddy and lifeless by comparison, and the current crop of offerings from Ibanez/Washburn/Gretsch/Epiphone aren't even in the same ballpark. Okay, that over-high neck position does take some getting used too, and a better out of the box set-up (and heavier frets) would enhance the experience, but sound-wise it's hard to fault - dialling up a wide selection of jazz, blues, classic pop, rockabilly and more contemporary lo-fi crunch with ease.
