Swords are just preference. That is a very good question. There is nothing like making your way through the game or a boss fight while two-handing a fire or lightning katana. I adore the lightning gargoyle halberd +5 even after the nerfing of elemental weapons in 1.06. They outclass much heavier weapons with better damage and range. The Lifehunt Scythe is the only worthy alternate with higher bleed damage, but it is shorter and cannot be enchanted. The 2H strong attack quickly propels you forward and cuts a giant swath of space in front of you. The Gargoyle’s Halberd is a rare drop from the Belfry gargoyles and a guaranteed drop from the Anor Londo gargoyles if not already in your inventory by then. Before we get started, there are 5 weapons worthy of honorable mentions. It’s fast, ignores armor with critical attacks and it’s powerful. The Balder Side Sword is to straight swords, what the Estoc is to thrusting swords. True to its brutish looks, this is a straight out two-handed medieval tool. These deal the same amount of damage regardless of your build. The Balder Side Sword is to straight swords, what the Estoc is to thrusting swords. That’s because Dark Souls has the most responsive and efficient sword play mechanics of any action RPG. A tiny club, really? The only requirement is the ability to wield the item successfully. If you have high poise, you can rain down multiple shots on your enemy and quickly cut them down to size. Add the increase in toxin and poison resistance, long range and strike area, low weight and it is easy to see why it ranks first on my list. The running attacks are the best in the game, incredibly fast and covering an amazing amount of ground. Once you get the hang of the move set, you can two-hand your way through any boss fight. However with high STR and DEX, Lucerne becomes the strongest of the halberds. The Moonlight GS move set combines the normal attacks of a Claymore with magic projectiles on both the 1H and 2H strong attacks. Take an Estoc, combine it with a straight sword, give it some reach, add an incredibly rangy, fast and useful poking attack, and you get the perfect straight sword. Both weapons are very similar to each other: the Great Club a bit heavier and slightly stronger, but I give the edge to the Large Club because of its poison damage. They are great weapons on their own right but they just could not crack my Top 10 list. Here is the link to the video if you want to see these Top 10 Weapons in action: There is probably no other game where the selection of your weapon is as important as in Dark Souls. Be careful, once you try this weapon, you may ignore the rest of your arsenal. DEX builds must wait until high stats and a +10 or more normal upgrade to match some of the damage that is immediately unlocked with a fire or lightning uchigatana. Both do the same damage as their cousins but have superior range and a better moveset. And the rangy strong 2H attack is slow but provides a graceful way to end a boss fight. The strong one-handed thrust attack has huge range and is fast, a useful combination when in tight quarters. Either of these clubs will let you bully even the baddest bosses in the game. It is fast enough that you can score multiple hits on a boss during recovery animations. What are your favorite ones? ( Log Out / But they will stun when they connect leaving your opponent helpless for a follow up. Kalamet is a dragon in the DLC. The Balder Side Sword is an outstanding weapon that can be used to finish the game in its fire or lightning modes. It is deadly when used in a combo along with high poise when you are trading blows with an enemy. The Darkwraiths have a rare chance of dropping it, but with covetous gold serpent ring and 10 humanity it should make it easier. The movesets are the same, except for the 2H strong attack. YES! Although heavier than other thrusting swords, the Estoc is longer yielding a larger attack range. Well, it does a flat out beastly 480 physical damage when maxed out and wielded with 2 hands. The Black Knight Halberd – this powerful but heavy halberd was left-out because its top end damage is limited and it requires high stats. Even a base Fire Zweihander will terrorize enemies and bosses in early-game, and will deal severe punishment in late-game when fully upgraded. But is that the right decision? You're PC right? You don’t want to waste precious upgraded materials on the wrong weapon. The range and speed of the attacks open up new boss strategies, leading to an operatic dance rather than a haphazard fight. The Scythe – an obscure but powerful halberd with low stats requirement. Regardless, once you have beaten Smough and Ornstein with a fire pole, or quickly killed the Hellkite Dragon with a lightning pole, you will know your souls and time were very well spent indeed! This sword is both quick and light. The moveset has a thrusting 1H strong attack that can be buffed with the Leo Ring. It begs to be wielded with both hands. But it’s excellent for any build since it scales with STR, and it’s also one of the most powerful elemental weapons. Thanks to the power of a +10 Fire Reinforced club, I was able to finish the game at level 1 (took me ~21 hours). The Estoc is the prime example. A no brainer for INT builds, the Moonlight GS has a rating of 480 magical damage at 50 INT. But a little farming is a small price to pay the best straight sword in the game. Anything related to Dark Souls! More importantly, it can be chained for a combo, which will dissolve huge chunks of the boss’s life bar, especially when the bleed damage kicks in. It scales with both STR and DEX and has an attack rating of 460 at 25 STR and 25 DEX. This is a great secondary weapon for those who prefer ranged attacks but need some solid back-up. The only negative is that you need to farm for it, and the BSS is a rare drop from the Balder Knights in the Undead Parish or Sen’s Fortress.
