In August 1972, a Chicano-rights group called the Brown Berets camped out on Catalina Island for three weeks, demanding that its almost 42,000 acres of undeveloped land be turned into housing. I grew up on Catalina, but only recently learned about this slice of history. Catalina Island is home to 22 Sensitive Ecological Areas as well as 26 endemic plant species. Wrigley played a huge role in the history and conservation of Catalina Island. It hosts a variety of native subspecies such as the Catalina Orangetip Butterfly and the Island Fox. The Catalina Island Tile and Pottery factory operated from 1927 to 1937. The guide also features a listing of upcoming events, resources for boaters to use once at the island, insight on local amenities and happenings, and a few dashes of history. Our annual Catalina Island Issue delves in to a few things local boaters can experience when visiting Southern California’s local getaway. There are remarkable details around the structure. It was established by the Santa Catalina Island Company to take advantage of the clay deposits discovered by William Wrigley, Jr. and David M. Renton and, more importantly, to use these to help reduce construction costs on the Island by producing building materials locally. The monument is such a cool place to visit. Catalina Island has a focus on conservation, and a lot of the efforts were led by Wrigley.
